Great question. Many people blame social media — it has allowed people to build public platforms that would not have been able to earn them in previous centuries. I think it’s more likely a combination of technologies; for example attention has decreased as amount of information has increased. Our expectations about instant availability, speed, etc have shifted as overnight delivery services became possible. It might be difficult to identify one specific source.
